Configuration Example

A typical VoIP configuration using an ATA.
How It Works

An ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) is a device that connects to your Broadband Internet and your regular telephone. When you make calls, instead of using Telstra's landline telephone system, the called is routed through a SIP proxy over the internet. Every phone number in Australia is cheaper than a regular local call!

Options

You have a few options for implementing your VoIP Service including:

  • Use Softphone (software program) with PC, headphones + microphone.
  • Use preconfigured hardware ATA + telephone connected to broadband modem / router.
  • Bring Your Own hardware ATA + telephone connected to broadband modem / router.
  • Use Integrated ADSL + VoIP modem / router connected to telephone.
For all of these you need a VoIP Account. This gives you a Phone Number, Username, Password and SIP Proxy Server which you then use to configure the ATA, Modem or Softphone, depending on the configuration you decide to use.
